Unitrans promotes key agricultural fleet management strategies such as minimising the harvest-to-milling window for optimal crop freshness, whilst taking care to avoid destructive levels of infield compaction through carefully engineered fleeting. The minimising of mill and factory stops, along with consistent deliveries, are key aspects of our successful logistics operations.
Unitrans Malawi Limited has been in existence for over 30 years (and previously as Bulwark Transport Malawi Limited since 1964). Historically, the company has been involved in bulk fuel transport, various agricultural logistics operations as well as passenger transport in Malawi. Unitrans currently has several business units in Malawi including 2 agricultural estates, 3 passenger terminals and an administrative head office in Malawi’s commercial hub, Blantyre. The company employs over 1,000 people and has 100 pieces of equipment in operation aimed at providing best in class transport and logistics solutions.
The company is extremely serious about maintaining safe operations and views SHEQ as a critical part of its business. Accordingly conformance to all SHEQ principles, policies, procedures and the law is not negotiable. We have developed an entire comprehensive SHEQ management system that contains all necessary policies and procedures. Unitrans also offers customized compliance to customer requirements, but always works towards “Zero Harm” – through the belief that all incidents are preventable through corrective and preventative actions.

Our People
Unitrans acknowledges that it has a key role and responsibility in supporting the communities in the areas in which it operates. The group addresses this through a focus on community development, education and childcare.
Throughout the group, individual operations identify and are involved in social projects that are aligned with their strategies and that are usually in close proximity to the operations, to make the biggest impact and difference to the communities.
The businesses actively engages with community members and works with community organisations, NGOs and various community service delivery organisations to develop the appropriate projects and to successfully execute these projects to the best advantage of the recipients.
Unitrans Africa – Malawi contributes to various social development causes in line with the Unitrans Africa’s group policy for sustainable corporate social development. As such, and in support of this objective Unitrans aims to contribute in the communities wherein they operate. Over the past number of year several contributions included:
- The vital donations during 2018 of much needed medical equipment to the Ntchisi District Hospital and satellite health centres at Dwangwa.
- Continuous support of community development projects run and managed in Dwangwa by the Round Table Dwangwa Chapter.
- During 2019 Cyclones Idai and Kenneth Relief Operations in the local Shire Valley area, Unitrans Africa Malawi – Nchalo Depot donated much needed food stuffs to the hard hit surrounding communities in collaboration with Illovo Sugar Malawi, Red Cross, World Vision, Total and FES.
- In the spirit of supporting local agricultural operations in an effort to boost sustainable outgrower productivity, Unitrans Africa Malawi – Nchalo, assists the Kasinthula) local farming community with free use of equipment such as seed cane trailers.
- Regular Safety Discussions and Briefs as well as Public Services Announcements over various Radio Broadcast Platforms aimed at raising awareness to the dangers related to transport activities at schools and several community forums in and around operational areas.

Unitrans Dwangwa Depot
Unitrans Africa Malawi Dwangwa Depot is located in the north of Malawi on the Illovo Sugar Estate Dwangwa on the shores of majestic Lake Malawi. Managed by an experienced team of agricultural, transport and maintenance services personnel, Unitrans Africa Malawi Dwangwa provides a whole range of Farm to Factory support services. It has run operations on the estate for more than 20 years and is considered a unique farming solution given the Bundle Cane Haulage system.
Services on the estate, range from bespoke agricultural land preparation services, general estate maintenance services, canal clearing and loading and haulage. Additional service offerings include Line Haul Transport arrangement for Outgrowers which deliver cane to the Illovo Sugar Mill. Throughout its contract Unitrans Africa Malawi Dwangwa Depot has established itself as a supplier of choice in the district.



Unitrans Nchalo Depot
Nestled in the Shire Valley on the banks of the Shire River Unitrans Africa – Malawi Nchalo Depot is found on the Illovo Sugar Estate. It provides sugar cane loading and haulage services to Illovo Sugar Nchalo where it assists in transporting approximately 1,2million tons of sugar cane to the Illovo Factory for 8 months of the year. Unitrans has a proud history at Nchalo and has been providing these services for 24 years. We boast a track record efficient and cost effective innovative loading and haulage solutions whilst in pursuit of continuous improvement development projects. Seeking inventive, reliable, efficient and well-coordinated supply chain solutions are vital to ensure optimum service levels are continually achieved. In recognition of this, Unitrans continually liaises with its Customers and outside service providers to ensure the supply solution reflects the needs of our customers and clients.
